After giving birth—in addition to the extra pounds and the still noticeably bloated belly that remained for weeks—I began to lose my hair... in clumps. I still remember the day my brush became my enemy: Every stroke seemed to rip out a handful of hair.
Don’t worry: this is a completely natural process.
During pregnancy, the body is flooded with estrogens—hormones that prolong the hair growth phase. The result: Hair becomes thicker, shinier, and stronger. After birth, however, hormone production drops abruptly. Estrogen levels drop dramatically, marking the end of the "growth phase" and triggering a massive transition into the resting or shedding phase (telogen phase).
In short: All the hair that was "on pause" during pregnancy now falls out at once. This postpartum hair loss usually begins between the second and fourth month after birth and can last up to a year. It's impressive—but rarely permanent.
The 10 best tips to stop hair loss after childbirth – and get beautiful, healthy hair again!
1. Eat a balanced and protein-rich diet
Hair is 95% keratin – a protein. Eat eggs, fish, legumes, nuts, and seeds. A deficiency in iron, zinc, or amino acids increases hair loss.
2. Get enough B vitamins and biotin
Vitamins B5, B6, and B8 (biotin) are involved in keratin formation. You can find them in eggs, nuts, bananas, avocados, and whole grain products.
3. Drink enough water
Internal hydration influences hair shine and resilience. Drink 1.5 to 2 liters of water daily—especially if you're breastfeeding.
4. Reduce postpartum stress
Stress directly affects the scalp and promotes hair loss. Try conscious breathing, daily walks, or short guided meditations.
5. Choose a mild, sulfate-free shampoo
Avoid harsh products. Opt for treatments with nettle, rosemary, or plant-based keratin. A soothed scalp = better regrowth.
6. Massage the scalp regularly
A massage stimulates microcirculation and supplies the hair roots with oxygen. Massage 2–3 times a week with a little castor or almond oil.
7. Avoid hairstyles that are too tight
Braided hairstyles, tight ponytails, or buns put strain on sensitive hair roots. Opt for loose, natural styles instead.
8. Limit heat and coloring
Blow-dryers, straighteners, bleaching—give your hair a few months of rest. Give it time to regenerate and regrow.
9. Take a course of dietary supplements
Hair treatments containing zinc, copper, selenium, and amino acids promote hair growth from within. Consult your midwife, pharmacist, or nutritionist for advice.
10. Be patient (and kind to yourself)
Your hair will grow back—often stronger than before. View this phase as temporary and remember: You just created life.
A care specially developed for Kouchoulou moms
Precisely because this postpartum hair loss had such a profound impact on me, we have included nutritional supplements from the French brand APNÉE in the Kouchoulou boxes for the postpartum period .
With a combination of plants, vitamins, and minerals, they promote hair regrowth and restore density and vitality to the mane. And to be honest, I recently started the treatment again – because I'm still losing a lot of hair due to hormonal fluctuations.
Hair is far more than just an aesthetic detail—it's a symbol of femininity and strength. Since ancient times, the beautiful hair has represented vitality, seduction, and even power—from Samson in the Bible to Venus in mythology.
When they fall out, you sometimes feel like you're losing a part of yourself. But no: It's just a cycle, a rebirth. Just as every new hair grows back, we too are reborn—a little changed, but ever stronger.
